Grave of Sarajevo’s Rabbi Moshe Danon

The tombstone marks the grave of the rabbi of Sarajevo Moše Danon, valued memeber of Jewish community from the beginning of 19th century.

He set off on foot to Palestine, wanting to die and to  be buried on the Holy Land. Accoring to the legend, he foresaw his death on the way and requested to be buried in the spot where death overtook him. His countrymen erected the monument in his memory ten years after his death. The tombstone is in the form of the Bosnia Jewish symbol known as the ‘Lion Couchant.’ Hisgravestone contains inscriptions in Hebrew. Two other gravestones are the graves of Austrian soldiers.
